About the Vaaran of Bhai Gurdas Ji. Bhai Gurdas Ji (c. 1551–1636), scribe of the first recension of the Guru Granth Sahib under Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, wrote 40 Vaaran (ballads) in Punjabi. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji is traditionally said to have called them the key (ਕੁੰਜੀ) to Gurbani, and the Sikh Rehat Maryada approves them, with Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s writings, for Kirtan alongside Gurbani.
