The Five Takhts — seats of Sikh authority

A Takht (throne) is a seat of temporal authority of the Khalsa Panth. Sri Akal Takht Sahib, established by Guru Hargobind Ji in 1606, is the foremost; four more are linked with the life of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Edicts (hukamnamas) of the Panth are issued from Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji stayed here in 1705 and prepared the full recension of Sri Guru Granth Sahib; the site became known as 'Guru ki Kashi' and was recognised as the fifth Takht in 1966.
