Bibi Bhani Ji was the daughter of Guru Amar Das Ji, the wife of Guru Ram Das Ji and the mother of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Sikh tradition remembers her for her humble, devoted seva to her father. Her life links three generations of Gurus.
Life
Bibi Bhani Ji was born in the 1530s, the younger daughter of Guru Amar Das Ji and Mata Mansa Devi Ji. She grew up in a household devoted to Guru Nanak Dev Ji's path, and later lived at Goindwal, where her father led the Sikh community. Exact dates of her birth and passing vary between sources, so historians usually give them by decade.
She married Bhai Jetha, a devoted Sikh who served tirelessly at Goindwal. In 1574 Guru Amar Das Ji passed the Guruship to him, and he became Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Guru, who founded the town of Ramdaspur, later Amritsar. Bibi Bhani Ji and Guru Ram Das Ji had three sons: Prithi Chand, Mahadev and Arjan Dev. The youngest became Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru.
According to Sikh tradition, Bibi Bhani Ji served her father with great devotion even after her marriage. A well-known sakhi tells that once, while the Guru was bathing, a leg of his wooden stool gave way, and she held it steady with her own hand so that he would not be disturbed, even though she was hurt. Tradition relates that the Guru, moved by her devotion, blessed her, and that the Guruship afterwards remained among her descendants. Bibi Bhani Ji is remembered as a woman of faith, patience and humility who stood at the heart of the Guru's family during a time of growth for the Sikh community. She is traditionally said to have passed away at Goindwal in the 1590s.
