Grown-ups: Seva is presented as everyday, humble help; the stories are traditional sakhis told simply.

What is Seva?

Seva means selfless service: helping others without wanting a reward, a prize or even a thank-you. When you do seva, you are not showing off. You are sharing the love of Waheguru through your hands. Seva can be big or tiny. Every kind action counts.

Seva at the Gurdwara

At the Gurdwara there are lots of ways to do seva. You can help look after the shoes, hand out water, roll rotis, serve food in Langar, or help clean up. Even grown-ups with important jobs wash dishes side by side with children. In seva, everyone is equal, and everyone is welcome to help.

Seva at home and outside

Seva isn't only at the Gurdwara. Setting the table, helping a grandparent, sharing your toys, picking up litter or helping a classmate who is stuck are all seva. You can also help animals and look after the earth. The key is doing it gently and humbly, without needing anyone to notice.

A child Guru who served

Guru Har Krishan Ji became the eighth Guru when he was a young child. According to Sikh tradition, when many people in Delhi fell ill, he visited and cared for the sick, bringing comfort and water to those who needed it. Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in Delhi stands where he stayed. Its water is still offered to visitors today.

A story from Sikh tradition

Bhai Kanhaiya's water

This is a story from Sikh tradition. During a battle near Anandpur Sahib, a Sikh named Bhai Kanhaiya Ji carried a water bag and gave water to every thirsty, hurt soldier he found — from both sides. Some Sikhs were upset and told Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Guru asked Bhai Kanhaiya Ji why. He answered that he did not see friends or enemies; he saw the Guru's light in every face. The Guru was pleased. He gave Bhai Kanhaiya Ji healing ointment too, so he could help people even more. Today many Sikhs remember him whenever they help anyone in need.
