Ik Oankaar Sat Naam Kartaa Purakh Nirbhau Nirvair Akaal Moorat Ajoonee Saibhan Gur Prasaad.
There is One — the single reality behind everything. Its identity is Truth. It is the Creator, present in what it creates; without fear and without enmity; beyond time; never born; self-existent. It is realised through the Guru's grace.

Context and purpose
Japji Sahib stands at the very beginning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, before the Raag-based sections. Unlike most Gurbani, it is not set to a raag: it is meant to be recited and reflected upon rather than sung. It opens with the Mool Mantar, the root statement of the Divine, followed by a short salok affirming that the One was true before time, is true now and will be true for ever.
Japji Sahib does not ask for worldly favours. It is a contemplation that moves step by step: it questions whether ritual, silence, cleverness or hoarding can bring us closer to the Divine, and answers that the way is to walk in harmony with Hukam, the Divine order. It then explores listening (suniai) and deep acceptance (mannai), the vastness of creation that no one can fully describe, and the inner journey through the realms (khands) of duty, knowledge, effort, grace and truth.
Traditional commentaries often describe Japji Sahib as the essence of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teaching. Because it is recited daily over a lifetime, its meaning tends to open gradually — which is why many Sikhs read it slowly, one pauri at a time, alongside a simple explanation.
When it is recited
The Sikh Rehat Maryada lists Japji Sahib as the first of the morning Nitnem Banis, to be recited in the early hours (Amrit Vela). It is also one of the Banis recited during Amrit Sanchar. Many Sikhs know it by heart and recite it every morning; families differ in exact timing, and a person who is unwell or travelling often simply recites or listens when they can.
How it is structured
- Mool Mantar and opening salok — The root statement of the One, and the affirmation that the One is true in every age.
- Pauris 1–7 — Why ritual, silence and cleverness do not reach the Divine; the teaching of Hukam; the Giver of all; the limits of our praise.
- Pauris 8–15 — The fruits of listening (suniai) and of deep acceptance (mannai) of the Word.
- Pauris 16–33 — The vastness of creation, the countless ways beings praise and forget, and the limits of human power and description.
- Pauris 34–37 — The five realms (khands) of duty, knowledge, effort, grace and truth.
- Pauri 38 and closing salok — The 'true mint' where life is shaped by discipline and the Word; air, water and earth as teacher, father and mother; those who remember the Naam.
Key themes
Hukam — the Divine order
Everything exists within the Divine order. Understanding Hukam, rather than fighting it with ego, is presented as the way to break the 'wall of falsehood' between us and the Divine.
Beyond ritual and cleverness
Japji Sahib gently sets aside outward cleansing, enforced silence, accumulated wealth and mere cleverness as routes to the Divine, pointing instead to inner alignment.
Listening, accepting, living
The pauris on suniai (listening) and mannai (accepting deeply) describe how the Word, taken to heart, transforms a person's understanding and conduct.
The inner journey
The closing pauris describe five realms — of duty, knowledge, effort, grace and truth — as stages of spiritual growth, ending with the image of a mint where life is shaped by the true Word.
Lines to reflect on
Aad sach jugaad sach. Hai bhee sach Naanak hosee bhee sach.
True before the beginning, true through every age; true now — and, says Nanak, true for ever.
Kiv sachiaaraa hoeeai kiv koorrai tuttai paal. Hukam rajaaee chalanaa Naanak likhiaa naal.
How can we become truthful, and how can the wall of falsehood between us and the Divine be broken? By walking in harmony with the Will (Hukam) of the Divine — the order written into our very being.
Everyone lives within the Divine order; no one stands outside it. Whoever truly understands that order stops speaking the language of ego.
Guraa ik dehi bujhaaee. Sabhnaa jeeaa kaa ik daataa so mai visar na jaaee.
O Guru, give me this one understanding: there is one Giver of all living beings — may I never forget that One.
Jin seviaa tin paaiaa maan.
Those who serve are the ones who are truly honoured.
Gurmukh naadan gurmukh vedan gurmukh rahiaa samaaee.
Through the Guru comes the sacred sound; through the Guru comes true knowledge; through the Guru one realises the Divine present everywhere.
Aape beej aape hee khaahu. Naanak hukamee aavahu jaahu.
You yourself sow, and you yourself eat what grows. Within the Divine order, we come and we go.
Aaee panthee sagal jamaatee man jeetai jag jeet.
Let seeing all humanity as your own fellowship be your highest order. Conquer your own mind, and you conquer the world.
Pavan guroo paanee pitaa maataa dharat mahat.
Air is the teacher, water the father, and the great earth the mother of all.
Jinee naam dhiaaiaa gae masakat ghaal. Naanak te mukh ujale ketee chhuttee naal.
Those who contemplated the Naam, and gave their effort to it, depart with their work complete. Their faces shine — and many others are freed along with them.

Practical reflections
- Where in my life today am I resisting what is, instead of acting wisely within it?
- Which pauri stayed with me this morning, and what one action could it shape today?
- If 'conquering the mind' is the real victory, what one habit of mind will I watch today?
